Ford EcoBoost Engine Problems – Vehicles Purchased or Leased New Only.

If you own a 2019 - 2025 Ford Fusion, Fiesta, Escape, Focus, Mustang, Transit, Explorer or Edge, you will undoubtedly have a 4 or 6-cylinder engine under the hood. The same for a Lincoln MKC, MKX or MKZ.

These engines can be problematic.

What kind of engine problems might I experience?

Engine problems that can develop in or out of the Ford 5 year/60,000 mile “Powertrain” warranty can include:

  • CHECK ENGINE warning light
  • Loss of power
  • Rough idle
  • Loss of coolant
  • Water pump failure
  • Engine overheat (and possible failure)
  • Coolant into cylinders
  • Leaking/failed head gasket
  • Exhaust manifold(s) crack(s)
  • Spark plugs fouled
  • Carbon buildup on valves
  • White smoke from exhaust pipe.
  • Coil packs failure (can be intermittent)
  • Engine temperature gauge needle goes into the “red” zone.

What is one of the main engine problems that Ford is aware of?

White smoke from exhaust is what owners first report. That and the illumination of the CHECK ENGINE light and/or loss of power. The engine may exhibit a low coolant level, white exhaust smoke and/or a runs rough condition with or without an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). Diagnostic trouble may be stored in powertrain control module (PCM). This may be due to coolant intrusion into the cylinder(s). To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to replace the long block engine assembly. This is Ford TSB # 19-2346. This bulletin supersedes 19-2208.

What is a EcoBoost engine?

An EcoBoost engine is a 4, or 6-cylinder engine that has both a turbocharger and direct fuel injection. It has been made in 1.5 litre, 1.6 litre, 2.0 litre, 2.7 litre and 3.5 litre sizes.

When they say “Eco”, they mean it uses less fuel. It’s economical. “Boost” is it’s more powerful equipped with its standard turbo charger. These together make for a engine that delivers both fuel economy and more power than a non-EcoBoost engine.
